Is FOODSAFE Level 1 Available Online?
Yes, and this guide shows the two online routes BC accepts, what each costs, and the one record-keeping rule most people miss.
Yes. FOODSAFE Level 1 is available online in British Columbia. You can take the official FOODSAFE Level 1 course by distance education, or take a BCCDC-approved equivalent course fully online. BC health authorities accept both routes. Our government-approved course is on the official BCCDC list of FOODSAFE Level 1 equivalents, costs $49.95, and gives you a same-day certificate valid for 5 years.
The short version
- Yes, you can complete FOODSAFE Level 1 training online in BC.
- Two accepted routes: the official FOODSAFE course, or a BCCDC-listed equivalent course.
- Our online course is on the official BCCDC equivalency list.
- BC law requires the operator to hold FOODSAFE Level 1 or an equivalent, and have trained coverage when they are away.
- Certificates are valid for 5 years.
- One catch with equivalents: you are not in the BC FOODSAFE Registry, so keep your own certificate as proof.

Can you take FOODSAFE Level 1 online?
Yes. FOODSAFE Level 1 training is available online in British Columbia, and BC health authorities accept online certificates. If you work in a restaurant, cafe, food truck, grocery deli, or any other food premises in BC, you do not need to sit in a classroom to get certified.
But here is where it gets more useful than a simple yes: there are two different online routes, and knowing the difference saves you time and money.
The two online routes BC accepts
| Route | What it is | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Official FOODSAFE Level 1 by distance | The provincial course taken online instead of in class | Your name goes into the BC FOODSAFE Registry |
| BCCDC-approved equivalent course | A course on the official BC Centre for Disease Control list of FOODSAFE Level 1 equivalents | Fully online, same legal standing, often cheaper and faster. You keep your own certificate as proof |
Our course is the second route. The Probe It Food Safety Course, both classroom and online versions, is on the official BC Centre for Disease Control list of courses equivalent to FOODSAFE Level 1. That means a certificate from our government-approved online course is legally accepted by health authorities across BC, whether you are in Vancouver, Surrey, or anywhere else in the province.

What BC law actually requires
Under BC's Food Premises Regulation, the operator of a food premises must hold FOODSAFE Level 1 or an equivalent certificate. When the operator is away, at least one employee on duty must hold it. That is why most BC food businesses certify more than one person, so a sick day or a shift change never puts them offside.
Certificates are valid for 5 years. After that, you retake the course and exam to renew. You can read how validity works across Canada in our guide on how long a food handler certificate is valid, which also covers FOODSAFE Level 1.
One more question people ask before paying anyone online: is the certificate real? Fair question, and our guide on whether an online food safety certificate is legitimate has a quick way to check any provider, including us.
The registry rule most people miss
Here is the one detail that trips people up. If you take the official FOODSAFE course, your certification is recorded in the BC FOODSAFE Registry. If you take a BCCDC-approved equivalent course like ours, we do NOT add you to that registry. Your certificate is still fully valid and accepted, but the certificate itself is your proof.
So the rule is simple: download your certificate the day you pass, save a copy on your phone, give one to your employer for the training records, and keep the original safe. When an inspector asks, you show the certificate. Employers should keep a copy for every certified staff member in their records.
"When I check training on an inspection, I am looking for a valid certificate, not a database entry. The workers who have it saved on their phone are done in ten seconds. The ones who 'took it online somewhere' and kept nothing are the ones with a problem."

Is an online FOODSAFE equivalent accepted everywhere in BC?

How long does the online course take?
You can certify in as little as 6 hours, and the course is self-paced, so you can stop and start around your schedule. Most people finish the same day they start and download the certificate right after passing.
How much does FOODSAFE Level 1 cost online?
Our BCCDC-listed equivalent course costs $49.95 and includes the course, the proctored exam with free unlimited retakes, and the same-day certificate. The official FOODSAFE course price varies by provider and format.
How long is the certificate valid?
Five years. After that, you renew by retaking the course and exam to keep your knowledge current with BC's rules.
Will I be in the BC FOODSAFE Registry?
Not with an equivalent course. The registry only records official FOODSAFE course completions. Your equivalent certificate is still fully valid, so keep the certificate itself as your proof and make sure your employer has a copy in the training records.
