Nunavut Food Safety Laws and Requirements

The Nunavut Food Establishment Safety Regulation compiles all the detailed requirements for a food establishment to determine the prevention of health hazards. It includes the minimum necessities in relation to maintenance, temperature control, sanitizing, pest control, food handler hygiene and the many day-to-day tasks that food handlers are involved in.

This Regulation is also used by Nunavut-authourized Health Inspectors during their inspections.

Nunavut Public Health Act In accordance with Nunavut’s Public Health Act (Part 4, Section 23.3), individuals distributing, selling, or serving food to the public, an institution, or a camp must ensure that the food is safe for human consumption by:

  • Taking reasonable measures to prevent contamination of the food
  • Taking reasonable measures to protect the public from other food-related health hazards

Obtaining food handler training and certification is the best practice for any food service business. It is strongly emphasized that everyone who handles food in the establishment becomes a Certified Food Handler.

In Nunavut, Food Handler Certifications are valid for five years, and you need to renew them every five years.
