WHMIS, or the Workplace Hazardous Information System, is the national system for providing health and safety information on hazardous materials that are used, handled or stored in workplaces across Canada. WHMIS is implemented through a combination of complementary federal, provincial and territorial laws. WHMIS has been in place since 1988. In 2015, Canada updated WHMIS to be aligned with GHS (the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and communication of hazards worldwide. This updated system is called “WHMIS 2015”.

Who is responsible for WHMIS training?

Employers have the responsibility to ensure their workers receive WHMIS education and training. All workers must be trained in the handling, storage and safe use of hazardous products before they use, or exposed to, or likely to be exposed to them. Our course covers WHMIS education. WHMIS education includes learning about general information about the main parts of WHMIS and how it works. Employers must also provide site-specific training.

Can I use my phone or tablet?

Yes, as long as the device has a working webcam and microphone, and the latest browser (Firefox or Chrome on Windows/Android devices, and Safari on Apple devices) you will be able to use it to take the online exam. The exam will not start if a working webcam or microphone is not detected.

How often do I need WHMIS training?

Employers are required to review their WHMIS program, including education and training, at least annually, and more often if there are changes in work conditions, hazard information or similar matters. Employers decide during the review if refresher education and training is necessary. As a worker, you should be able to answer the questions below for every hazardous product you use. If not, then refresher education and training is recommended. 1. What are the hazards of the product? 2. How do I protect myself from those hazards? 3. What do I do in the case of an emergency? 4. Where can I get further information? The general recommendation is that WHMIS training be completed at least annually.

Do I need to purchase study materials?

Absolutely Not. Once you purchase our course, all learning materials you need will be available. We will provide you with the information you can study to learn about the classification and safe use of hazardous products.

Is WHMIS 2015 still valid?

Yes! WHMIS 2015 is still valid and accepted across Canada.

How much does WHMIS certification cost in Canada?

Most Canadian WHMIS courses cost $25 to $50. Probe It is $12.95, the lowest price in Canada. There is no subscription, no hidden fees, and no per-retake charge. Bulk discounts are available for teams of 10 or more, with a free admin dashboard to issue seats and track completion.

How long is a WHMIS certificate valid?

Most Canadian employers require WHMIS training to be reviewed every year. Retraining is also required when the workplace changes, when new hazardous products arrive, or when workers move to a new role. Provincial OHS rules vary slightly. Check with your employer for the exact retraining schedule.

How often is WHMIS training required?

WHMIS training is required before a worker handles a hazardous product. Refresher training is required when the work changes, when new hazardous products arrive, or when the worker's knowledge needs updating. Most Canadian workplaces run a yearly WHMIS refresher to stay aligned with federal and provincial OHS expectations.

Is online WHMIS training legitimate?

Yes. Online WHMIS training is fully recognized across Canada when the course meets the content and assessment requirements of the federal Hazardous Products Regulations and provincial OHS legislation. The Probe It WHMIS course covers all required topics, ends with a knowledge test, and produces a dated certificate. If you are not happy with the course, contact us within 15 days of purchase for a full refund.

Who needs WHMIS training in Canada?

Anyone who works with, handles, or may be exposed to hazardous products needs WHMIS training. This covers warehousing, manufacturing, healthcare, labs, janitorial, education, retail, hospitality, and trades. Employers are responsible for ensuring workers complete training before they handle hazardous products.

What does WHMIS 2015 cover that WHMIS 1988 did not?

WHMIS 2015 follows the global GHS standard. It uses pictograms instead of symbols, adds new hazard classes for things like aspiration toxicity, and uses standardized safety data sheet (SDS) formats. WHMIS 1988 used different symbols and a separate MSDS format. The Probe It course covers both, so workers are ready for any workplace, including older facilities still referencing legacy materials.

Do I need a WHMIS refresher every year?

Most Canadian employers run yearly WHMIS refresher training to stay compliant with federal and provincial OHS rules. Refresher training is also required when the workplace changes, new hazardous products are introduced, or when a worker moves to a new role. Probe It works for both first-time certification and yearly refreshers.

Can I train my whole team with bulk pricing?

Yes. Volume discounts are available for teams of 10 or more workers. You get a free admin dashboard to issue seats, track completion, and download certificates centrally. Common bulk customers include warehousing, manufacturing, healthcare, retail chains, and trades. Email support@probeit.ca with your worker count for a quote.

Is WHMIS only used in Canada?

WHMIS is Canada's system for hazardous workplace products, but it follows the international GHS standard used in many countries. The hazard pictograms, safety data sheets, and labels you learn in this course match that global format, so your training still makes sense if you work with the same products elsewhere.

What happens if I fail the WHMIS exam?

You can retake the final test as many times as you need at no extra cost. Review the modules, then try again. You only earn your certificate once you pass, and there is no per-retake charge.
