- Your expiry date is printed on the certificate.
- There is no grace period. The day it expires, you are no longer counted as trained staff.

How long is a food handler certificate valid?
Five years. This is the standard across Canada, and your expiry date is printed right on the certificate. The five year window exists because food safety rules change over time, so workers retrain to stay current. Once the date passes, the certificate is no longer valid and you must renew before you can be counted as trained staff on a shift.
In Ontario, every food premises must have at least one certified food handler on site during operating hours, under Ontario Regulation 493/17. Public health units, such as York Region, confirm the certificate is recognized across Ontario and valid for five years.

What happens if your certificate expires?
An expired certificate is treated the same as having no certificate. In most provinces, a food premise must have at least one person with valid training on site during every hour it is open. If your certificate has lapsed, your employer can no longer count you as that trained person, and you may be pulled off food duties until you renew.
"In my inspections, an expired certificate is one of the most common gaps I write up. Ontario has no grace period, so the day it expires you are no longer qualified."

Employers can also face warnings or fines if staff certificates are out of date, which is why most businesses now track expiry dates closely.
Food handler, food safety, and FOODSAFE: are they the same?
For most workers, yes. "Food Handler Certificate" and "Food Safety Certificate" usually mean the same training. British Columbia calls its version FOODSAFE Level 1. They all cover the same core topics: safe temperatures, cleaning and sanitizing, hygiene, allergens, and your legal duties. The credential you need depends on the province you work in.

Retake an approved online course and pass the exam again. You get a new 5 year certificate the same day. Ontario has no grace period, so renew before your current one expires.
Does my food handler certificate work in other provinces?
Generally yes. A recognized food handler certificate is accepted across Canada, so it stays valid if you move or change jobs between provinces. The two exceptions to know: British Columbia uses FOODSAFE Level 1 as its standard, and Quebec runs its own MAPAQ system, so check the local rule if you move to either.

For most workers there is no real difference. Both names refer to the same training. British Columbia uses a separate name, FOODSAFE Level 1, for its version.

Five years from the date it was issued. The expiry date is printed on the certificate.
