Yukon Compliance

Yukon Food Safety Law: What You Need to Know

Yukon food safety is set by three laws. The Food Retail and Food Services Code. The Public Health and Safety Act. And the Donation of Food Act.

The Yukon Department of Health and Social Services runs food safety in the territory. Environmental Health Officers do the inspections.

The Code sets the training rule:

Yukon Food Retail and Food Services Code "Employees who come directly into contact with food should be trained or have knowledge of proper food hygiene to a level appropriate to the duties they perform. Some jurisdictions may require food hygiene certification to be mandatory for managers and supervisors of food establishments."

Here is the honest truth. Yukon does not have an explicit rule that every food business must hold a food handlers certificate. But Health Officers can require training when they think it is needed. And most Yukon employers ask for it anyway. Why? Because every other Canadian province requires it.

Health Officers can enter your business at any time. They can check your certificate, take samples, seize unsafe food, issue fines, and close your business.

One thing sets Yukon apart. The Donation of Food Act protects you from being sued if you donate food in good faith. This helps restaurants that donate leftover food to local shelters or food banks.

Our Yukon food safety course meets the Food Retail and Food Services Code. It is also called food handler training Yukon and food safety training Yukon. The same food handlers certificate Yukon works across the entire territory.

Why Yukon restaurants should certify even without an explicit mandate

Samira Ali, Certified Public Health Inspector, 10+ years across Canada

"Yukon is the only Canadian jurisdiction without an explicit certification mandate written into territory-wide law. But Environmental Health Officers can still require training during an inspection if they feel a business is unsafe. And most Yukon employers ask for certification anyway. Why? Because every other province in Canada requires it. If you hire a worker who has worked in BC, Alberta, or Ontario, they already know the rule. If your team is not certified, you are the odd one out. The Whitehorse food scene is small. Word gets around. Certify your team to keep up with the rest of the country."

Food Handlers Certificate Yukon FAQs

Common questions from Yukon food workers and employers.

Do I need a food handlers certificate in Yukon?
Yukon does not have an explicit territory-wide rule that requires every food business to hold a food handlers certificate. The Food Retail and Food Services Code says employees who handle food should be trained to a level appropriate for their role. Most employers and inspectors expect certification anyway because it is the standard across Canada. If you handle food in Whitehorse or anywhere else in Yukon, certifying is the safest choice.
How do I get my food handlers certificate Yukon online?
Sign up in 30 seconds. Take our online food handlers certificate Yukon course at your own pace. Most people finish in 3 to 6 hours. Pass the exam with 70% or more. You get your certificate by email the same day. The course works on any phone, tablet, or laptop.
How long is the food handler certificate Yukon valid for?
Your Yukon food handler certificate is good for 5 years. Most employers recommend renewal every 5 years to keep your training current. After that, you take the course again. The certificate is valid in Whitehorse, Dawson City, Watson Lake, Haines Junction, and everywhere else in the territory. It is also accepted across Canada. The free WHMIS 2015 certificate is valid for 3 years.
Is there a free food handlers certificate Yukon option?
No. No legal Yukon provider gives away the full certificate for free. Some sites offer free study material but charge for the exam or certificate. The Yukon Food Retail and Food Services Code requires training that is appropriate for the role. Our food safety certificate Yukon is $49.95 with free WHMIS included.
How much is a food handler certificate in Yukon?
Our food safety certificate Yukon costs $49.95 one time. There are no extra fees. You also get a free WHMIS 2015 certificate worth $24.95. Other Yukon providers charge $29.95 to $99.95. Most do not include WHMIS.
Is food handler training mandatory in Yukon?
Not as an explicit territory-wide mandate. The Yukon Food Retail and Food Services Code states that employees who contact food should be trained appropriately, but it does not require every food business to have a certified handler. Health Officers can still require training during an inspection if they consider it necessary. Most Yukon employers expect certification anyway.
Is this Yukon food handler certificate accepted across the whole territory?
Yes. Your food handlers certificate Whitehorse is recognized by the Yukon Department of Health and Social Services territory-wide. That covers Whitehorse, Dawson City, Watson Lake, Haines Junction, Carmacks, Mayo, and every other community. If you change jobs or move communities, your certificate still counts.
What is the Yukon Donation of Food Act?
The Donation of Food Act (SY 2012, c. 11) protects people and organizations from civil liability when they donate food in good faith. If a restaurant donates leftover food to a Whitehorse shelter or food bank, the donor is protected from being sued if someone gets sick, as long as the food was not adulterated and the donor did not act recklessly. This Act does not apply to food sold for profit.
Can I get a food handler certificate online Yukon residents trust?
Yes. The full Yukon food safety course is 100% online. The exam is online too with a webcam proctor. You can use a phone, tablet, or laptop. You do not need to go to a classroom. Yukon Environmental Health Officers accept our online food handler training Yukon across the territory.
Why should I certify my Yukon team if it is not mandatory?
Three reasons. First, Environmental Health Officers can require training if they think your business is unsafe. Second, certification proves due diligence if something goes wrong. Third, every other Canadian province requires it. Workers from BC, Alberta, or Ontario already expect to see certificates posted. Certifying your team keeps you on par with the rest of the country.
Can I buy Yukon food handler certificates for my whole team?
Yes. We sell bulk certificates to restaurants, hotels, catering companies, schools, and franchises in Whitehorse and across Yukon. Order in groups of 5, 10, 25, or 100+. You get a volume discount. Each staff member gets their own login and their own Yukon food handler certificate.
Is the food handler exam hard?
The exam is multiple choice. You need 70% to pass. About 99% of people pass on the first try. If you do not pass, you can retake it free as many times as you need. If any Yukon inspector rejects your certificate, you get a full refund.
