Is WHMIS Training Mandatory in Alberta?

Yes. WHMIS training is mandatory in Alberta. The rule comes from the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Code, Part 29. An employer must make sure any worker who works with or near a hazardous product, or who helps make one, is trained.

The law does not name a physical certificate. It requires the actual training, so workers understand the hazards and know how to safely use, store, and handle the products at their work site.

Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code — Part 29 Employers must ensure workers who work with, near, or help make a hazardous product receive both generic WHMIS education and workplace-specific training for the exact products at their site.

Not every product needs a WHMIS label and safety data sheet. Alberta's rules exempt several categories, including wood, tobacco, manufactured articles, consumer products, cosmetics, drugs, food, explosives, and pest control products. Source: Alberta OHS Code, Part 29

Another Alberta-specific detail: employers must update a safety data sheet within 90 days when significant new hazard information becomes available, rather than waiting for the general 3-year update cycle.

WHMIS in Alberta is enforced by the Ministry of Jobs, Economy and Trade, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Division. OHS officers can visit a workplace, confirm that exposed workers hold current WHMIS training, and issue orders when training is missing.

WHMIS Certificate Alberta Frequently Asked Questions

Is WHMIS training mandatory in Alberta?
Yes. WHMIS training is mandatory in Alberta under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Code, Part 29. Any worker who works with or near a hazardous product, or who helps make one, must be trained. Source: Alberta OHS Code, Part 29
Is a WHMIS certificate legally required, or just the training?
The training is what the law requires, not a specific certificate document. Part 29 requires employers to provide the actual training so workers understand the hazards and know how to safely use, store, and handle products at their work site. With Probe It, you get both: real training and a certificate you can show right away.
How do I get my WHMIS certificate in Alberta?
To get a WHMIS certificate in Alberta, take an online WHMIS 2015 course that covers the education Part 29 requires. With Probe It you sign up in 30 seconds, finish in about one hour, pass the final test, and download your printable certificate the same day for $12.95.
How much does a WHMIS certificate cost in Alberta?

Can I do WHMIS training online in Alberta?
Yes, for the generic education part. The Probe It course is 100 percent online on a phone, tablet, or laptop, and covers the generic WHMIS 2015 content. Your employer still needs to provide workplace-specific training on the exact hazardous products used at your job site, in addition to the online course.
What is the difference between generic and workplace-specific WHMIS training in Alberta?
Generic WHMIS education teaches the basics, like what a supplier label or safety data sheet means. Workplace-specific training teaches the exact procedures for safely storing, using, handling, and making the specific hazardous products at your actual work site, plus what to do in a spill or emergency. An online course like Probe It's covers the generic education. Workplace-specific training still has to come from your employer.
Does every product in an Alberta workplace need a WHMIS label and SDS?
No. WHMIS rules only apply to hazardous products. Alberta's rules exempt several categories from label and SDS requirements, including wood, tobacco, manufactured articles, consumer products, cosmetics, drugs, food, explosives, and pest control products. Source: Alberta OHS Code, Part 29
How long is a WHMIS certificate valid in Alberta?
The law does not set an exact expiry date for a certificate. Employers must keep safety data sheets current, updating them within 90 days when important new hazard information comes in, which means training has to stay current too. The Probe It WHMIS certificate is issued valid for 1 year, so you stay on the safe side of every employer's renewal policy. Source: CCOHS
Who needs WHMIS training in Alberta?
Any worker who works with or near a hazardous product, or who performs work that involves making a hazardous product at an Alberta work site, must be trained. This covers warehousing, manufacturing, healthcare, labs, janitorial, education, retail, hospitality, and trades.
What law requires WHMIS in Alberta?
WHMIS in Alberta is required under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Code, Part 29. The federal Hazardous Products Regulations set the label and safety data sheet rules, while Part 29 sets the worker training duties for Alberta workplaces. Source: Alberta OHS Code, Part 29
Who enforces WHMIS in Alberta?
WHMIS in Alberta is enforced by the Ministry of Jobs, Economy and Trade, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Division. OHS officers can visit a workplace, confirm that exposed workers have completed WHMIS training, and issue orders when training is missing. Source: CCOHS
What is the difference between WHMIS 1988 and WHMIS 2015 in Alberta?
WHMIS 2015 follows the global GHS standard. Products that used to be called "Controlled Products" were renamed "Hazardous Products." The new system uses pictograms instead of the old symbols, adds new hazard classes, and uses standardized safety data sheets (SDS). WHMIS 1988 used different symbols and the older MSDS format. In Alberta, employers must also update a safety data sheet within 90 days when significant new hazard information comes in, rather than waiting for the general 3-year update cycle. The Probe It Alberta course covers both 2015 and 1988, so workers are ready for any Alberta workplace. Source: Alberta OHS Code, Part 29
How often is WHMIS refresher training required in Alberta?
Alberta's rules do not set an exact yearly timeline, but general WHMIS practice across Canada calls for employers to review their training program at least annually, or sooner if work conditions change or new hazard information becomes available. The Probe It certificate is issued valid for 1 year. Source: CCOHS
What happens if I fail the WHMIS exam?
You can retake the final test as many times as you need at no extra cost. Review the modules, then try again. You only earn your Alberta WHMIS certificate once you pass, and there is no per-retake charge.
