What has to be on the label

Three required elements, and nothing more

CCOHS sets the same three requirements for every Canadian workplace label. This tool covers all three. There's no set format; exact rules are set by your province or territory.

1

Product name

Must match the name on the Safety Data Sheet exactly. Write it out in full. No short forms or chemical formulas.

2

Safe handling precautions

Plain instructions for using the product safely. Pictograms can be included but aren't required.

3

Reference to the SDS

So workers know exactly where to find full hazard details when they need them.

When it applies

When you need one, and when you do not

A workplace label is needed when...

  • Decanting. The product is poured from its original container into another container.
  • Damaged or missing supplier label. The supplier label is lost or no longer readable, with product still in the container.
  • Made at the workplace. The employer produces or manufactures a hazardous product on site.
  • Bulk shipments. An unpackaged hazardous product arrives without a supplier label.
  • Imported products. A hazardous product is imported for the employer's own use and arrives without a label meeting Canadian federal rules.

A sticker label isn't required when...

  • Immediate use. Poured for immediate use, or stays under the control of the person who poured it for that shift. The container must still show the product name.
  • Pipes, vessels, and tanks. Not required if colour coding, placards, or another clear identification method is used along with worker training.
  • Placards. For loose material, export product, or product about to be packaged for sale, a large visible placard can carry the label information instead.

There is no set format for a workplace label. Exact requirements are set by your province or territory, so check your local occupational health and safety regulator.

A note before you print. WHMIS regulations can vary by province and change over time. This tool helps you make a basic workplace label, but your provincial or territorial regulator sets the exact rules for your workplace. If you spot something that needs updating, email info@probeit.ca.
