To work with food in Vancouver, you need FOODSAFE Level 1, the food safety certificate British Columbia uses. You can finish the course online in a single sitting, pass the exam, and get certified the same day. It costs $49.95, registration takes 30 seconds, and the certificate is valid for 5 years and accepted by Vancouver Coastal Health across the city.
Vancouver runs on food jobs. From the restaurants on Granville and Robson to the cafes in Mount Pleasant, the food courts downtown, and the food trucks across the city, almost every food service employer asks for FOODSAFE Level 1 before your first shift. The good news: you do not need to sit in a classroom to get it. You can take the FOODSAFE Level 1 course for Vancouver fully online. Here is exactly how it works in Vancouver.
FOODSAFE Level 1 is the certificate Vancouver Coastal Health inspectors look for in city kitchens.
The short version
Vancouver uses FOODSAFE Level 1. It is BC's name for the food handler certificate. Same training, different name.
It is the law. Every food business and at least one worker per shift must hold a valid FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate.
You can do it online. Same day, $49.95, register in 30 seconds.
The exam is 50 questions. You need 70% to pass. It is not open book, so do the course first.
Valid 5 years. Vancouver Coastal Health accepts it across every Vancouver neighbourhood.
What FOODSAFE Level 1 is, and why Vancouver uses that name
British Columbia does not call it a "food handler certificate." The province calls it FOODSAFE Level 1. It is the exact same idea as the food handler certificate in Ontario or Alberta: proof that a food worker has been trained in safe food handling. The name is just different.
FOODSAFE is a Province of British Columbia program, run with the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and the regional health authorities. In Vancouver, that authority is Vancouver Coastal Health, which issues food premises permits and sends Environmental Health Officers to inspect local restaurants, cafes, grocery delis, and food trucks.
Do you legally need FOODSAFE Level 1 to work in Vancouver?
Yes, in most food roles. BC's Food Premises Regulation (BC Reg 210/99) requires that every operator of a food service establishment, and at least one employee on every shift, holds a valid FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate or a BCCDC-recognized equivalent. Because employers need someone certified on every shift, most simply ask all food staff to get it.
That covers cooks, servers, kitchen helpers, baristas, deli and counter staff, food truck workers, and many grocery roles across Vancouver. If you handle food, prep, or service, you almost certainly need it.
★ Inspector's Note
When I inspect a busy Vancouver kitchen, the first thing I confirm is that someone on that shift holds a valid FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate. I have seen new hires downtown and on Commercial Drive start a shift without it, and the manager scramble. Get certified before your first day, save a copy on your phone, and you are never the reason a shift gets flagged.
