How to Get Food Safety Certification in Canada

The four steps to a recognized certificate online, what the exam covers, how long it lasts, and the one rule that is different in British Columbia.

Quick answer

To get food safety certification in Canada, complete an approved online food handler course, pass the proctored exam (50 questions, 70 percent to pass), and download your certificate the same day. It costs $49.95, takes as little as 6 hours, and is valid for 5 years across every province. In British Columbia the same training is called FOODSAFE Level 1.

The short version

  1. Pick an approved online course and register. It takes about 30 seconds.
  2. Work through the lessons at your own pace, as little as 6 hours.
  3. Pass the proctored exam: 50 multiple choice questions, 70 percent to pass.
  4. Download your certificate the same day. It is valid 5 years across Canada.
  5. In British Columbia, look for FOODSAFE Level 1, the provincial name for the same training.

Is food safety certification required in Canada?

In most of the country, yes. Food safety is set by each province, not by one national law, but the requirement is widespread. Nine provinces and territories legally require a trained, certified person on site when food is being prepared, and the rest expect training that matches the duties a worker performs.

In Ontario, for example, every food premises must have at least one trained food handler on site during operating hours. The same idea repeats across the country under different regulation numbers. If you want the exact rule and the citation for your province, I keep a full breakdown in our guide to Canadian food safety rules by province.

The certificate itself goes by a few names. Most provinces call it a Food Handler Certificate. It is the same skill set as a food safety certificate, and the two terms are used to mean the same training. British Columbia is the one place with a different name and its own rule, which I cover below.

How to get certified online in 4 steps

You do not need a classroom. An approved online course carries the same legal weight as in person training, and you can finish the whole thing in an evening. Here is the process start to finish.

  1. Register for an approved course. Sign up takes about 30 seconds and works on any device. Make sure the provider is recognized by your province or, in Ontario, on the Ministry of Health approved list. Not sure how to check? Here is how to verify an online food handler certificate is legitimate.
  2. Complete the training. The lessons cover the core food safety topics: foodborne illness, time and temperature control, cross contamination, personal hygiene, allergens, and cleaning and sanitizing. Most people finish in as little as 6 hours, and you can stop and start.
  3. Pass the proctored exam. The Canadian standard is 50 multiple choice questions with a 70 percent pass mark. The exam is webcam proctored to meet provincial oversight. If you do not pass the first time, you can retake it.
  4. Download your certificate. Once you pass, the certificate is emailed the same day, usually within an hour. Print it, save it, or send it straight to your employer.

What the exam covers and the pass mark

The exam is where the training gets checked, and the national standard is consistent: 50 multiple choice questions, 70 percent to pass. It is not a memory test of trivia. It checks that you can apply safe practice in a real kitchen.

Expect questions on these areas:

  • Foodborne illness and how contamination spreads
  • Time and temperature control, including the danger zone
  • Cross contamination between raw and ready to eat food
  • Personal hygiene and handwashing
  • Cleaning and sanitizing surfaces and equipment
  • Allergen awareness and your legal responsibilities

The exam is proctored through your device camera. That is a good thing for you, because a proctored result is the kind an inspector accepts without question if a certificate is ever challenged.

British Columbia: FOODSAFE Level 1

British Columbia is the one province you cannot treat like the rest. What other provinces call a Food Handler Certificate, BC calls FOODSAFE Level 1. It is the same training under a provincial name, set out in Section 10 of the Food Premises Regulation and overseen by the BC Centre for Disease Control.

The part that trips people up: most out of province certificates do not automatically count in BC. The BCCDC keeps an official list of courses it recognizes as equivalent to FOODSAFE Level 1, and only those count. Here is the good news: the Probe It Food Safety Course, both the classroom and online versions, is on that list. You can check it yourself on the official BCCDC equivalency list. So if you certified with us in Ontario and then move to Vancouver, your certificate is still recognized. One note from the same document: equivalent course holders are not entered in the BC FOODSAFE Registry, so keep a copy of your certificate as your own training record.

The good news is the format matches the rest of the country. FOODSAFE Level 1 is valid for 5 years, the exam is 50 questions with a 70 percent pass mark, and an approved online version is accepted the same as the classroom course. If you are hiring or working in Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Victoria, or anywhere else in BC, start with FOODSAFE Level 1.

"The certificate an inspector wants to see is simple to spot. It names the person, it has not expired, and it comes from a provider the province recognizes. Where I saw people get caught was an out of province card in BC, or a certificate that lapsed quietly five years after the issue date."

How long the certificate lasts

A Canadian food handler certificate, and FOODSAFE Level 1 in BC, is valid for 5 years from the date of issue. After that you retake the training and the exam to stay current. There is no recognized refresher shortcut in most provinces, so treat the 5 year mark as a hard date.

If you want the province by province detail on expiry and renewal, I cover it in how long a food handler certificate is valid in Canada.

Why train with an inspector-built course

Most online courses are written by a content team working from a textbook. Ours is built and reviewed by a working public health inspector, the same role that checks the certificate during an inspection. That is the difference between learning the rules and learning how the rules are enforced on the floor.

This short video walks through why that matters and what you get with the course.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a food safety certificate the same day?

Yes. With an approved online course you register in about 30 seconds, finish the lessons in as little as 6 hours, pass the exam, and download your certificate the same day, usually within an hour of passing.

Is an online food safety certificate valid across Canada?

Yes, when it is from an approved provider, an online certificate carries the same legal weight as a classroom one and is recognized across the country. British Columbia only accepts FOODSAFE Level 1 or a course on the BCCDC equivalency list. The Probe It Food Safety Course is on that list, so it is accepted in BC as well.

How long does the course take?

As little as 6 hours, at your own pace. You can do it in one sitting or split it across a few sessions. The exam takes under an hour on top of that.

What is the pass mark for the exam?

The Canadian standard is 50 multiple choice questions with a 70 percent pass mark. The exam is webcam proctored. If you do not pass on the first try, you can retake it.

How long is the certificate valid?

5 years from the date of issue, for both a Food Handler Certificate and FOODSAFE Level 1 in BC. After 5 years you retake the training and exam to stay current.

What is the certificate called in British Columbia?

FOODSAFE Level 1. It is the BC name for the same food handler training, set out in the Food Premises Regulation and overseen by the BCCDC. It also lasts 5 years.
