Island Health FOODSAFE Level 1 Victoria Requirements

Island Health regulates every food premise in the City of Victoria under the BC Food Premises Regulation. Section 10 of the regulation requires every operator of a food service establishment to hold a FOODSAFE certificate or its equivalent. When the operator is away, at least one employee on site must hold it too.

The FOODSAFE program is an initiative of the Province of British Columbia, managed by the BC FOODSAFE Secretariat with the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), BC regional health authorities, and food service industry associations. Island Health Environmental Health Officers verify FOODSAFE Level 1 credentials during routine and complaint-driven inspections.

BC Food Premises Regulation, B.C. Reg. 210/99, Section 10 (1) "Every operator of a food service establishment must hold a certificate for the successful completion of the food handler training program known as FOODSAFE or its equivalent."

Our FOODSAFE Level 1 Victoria, FOODSAFE certificate Victoria, FOODSAFE course Victoria, and food safety training Victoria all meet BC's provincial training standard. Environmental Health Officers recognize the certificate during inspections at every Victoria food premise. The same certificate is accepted by all five BC regional health authorities (Island Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, Interior Health, Northern Health), so it stays valid if you change jobs or move within the province.

Common questions from Victoria food workers and employers.

Is FOODSAFE Level 1 required in Victoria?
Yes. Under Section 10 of the BC Food Premises Regulation, every operator of a food service establishment in Victoria must hold a FOODSAFE certificate or its equivalent. When the operator is away, at least one employee on site must hold it. Island Health enforces this rule across all restaurants, cafés, food trucks, catering operations, daycares, and care facilities serving food.
Does Island Health accept this FOODSAFE Level 1 course Victoria?

Island Health Environmental Health Officers recognize the FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate during routine and complaint-driven inspections at every food premise across Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, Langford, and Sidney. One thing to know: equivalent-course holders are not in the BC FOODSAFE Registry, so keep your own certificate as your training record.
What is the difference between FOODSAFE Level 1 and a Food Handlers Certificate?
FOODSAFE Level 1 is the specific provincial standard used in British Columbia, managed by the BC FOODSAFE Secretariat with the BC Centre for Disease Control. In other provinces it is called a Food Handlers Certificate. They cover the same core food safety topics. In Victoria and across BC, the credential you need is FOODSAFE Level 1 or an approved equivalent. See the province-wide FOODSAFE Level 1 BC page.
How long does the FOODSAFE Level 1 course Victoria take to complete?

Your FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate Victoria is valid for 5 years. WHMIS works differently. Employers are legally required to review WHMIS training programs at least annually. Plan to refresh your team's knowledge every year.
Is the certificate accepted by all BC health authorities?
Yes. Our FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate is accepted by all five BC regional health authorities, including Island Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, Interior Health, and Northern Health. If you change jobs or move to another BC city, your certificate stays valid province-wide.
Can I use one certificate across Victoria and Greater Victoria?
