Brampton's food economy spans chaat houses, banquet halls, dine-in restaurants, tea houses, bakeries, and food trucks. This course covers every food service role across Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon, the three municipalities in Peel Region. Under the regulation, a food handler is anyone employed in a food premise who handles food or comes in contact with utensils during preparation, service, storage, or transportation.

Peel Public Health inspects every food premise in Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon under Ontario Regulation 493/17 (Food Premises), made under the Health Protection and Promotion Act. Brampton has no separate bylaw for food handler training. The rule comes from Section 32 of the provincial regulation, and it applies to every food service premise: any place where meals or meal portions are prepared for immediate consumption, or sold or served ready to eat.
32. Every operator of a food service premise shall ensure that there is at least one food handler or supervisor on the premise who has completed food handler training during every hour in which the premise is operating.
Peel Public Health ended its own food handler certification course and exams on June 30, 2025. It still publishes a study guide, but it no longer trains or tests. The regulation counts training from a local board of health or from a program the Ministry has recognized as equivalent, so Ministry-recognized programs, including this one, are now the route for Brampton food workers. Your certificate counts toward the Section 32 rule at every Brampton food service premise. It is also accepted by every other public health unit in Ontario, so it stays valid if you change jobs or move to Mississauga, Toronto, or anywhere else in the province. See the province-wide Ontario food handlers certificate page for the full picture.
Peel inspectors visit food premises on a risk-based schedule and after complaints, and can ask to see the certificates of the food handlers on shift. If your certified person is off sick and nobody else is certified, you are short for that hour.
