Best Online Food Safety Course in Canada: An Honest Comparison
Five providers, one table, and the one question nobody else asks: will your staff actually stay awake through it?
The best online food safety course in Canada depends on what you value. Worksite Safety has the lowest sticker price at $19.95. CIFS ($99.95) includes a large resource library. The Probe It course at $49.95 includes a free WHMIS certificate and is Canada's only food safety course built in Articulate Storyline, with an interactive activity or game every third screen. All certificates below are valid for 5 years.

Who I am and why I built a course
Hello, I'm Samira Ali. I am a Certified Public Health Inspector, and I have worked in food safety since 2010. Over the years, I learned what students actually need to stay engaged and remember what they learn. I built the Probe It food handler course around that, and I spent two to three years asking students for feedback until I got it right. I know an interactive course when I see one, because I have trained over 200,000 students. Most online food safety courses are not interactive. This comparison will show you the difference.
Yes, my course is in this comparison, so read the table with that in mind. I have kept every competitor row to facts published on their own websites, and I will tell you plainly where each provider beats us. If price is your only concern, my honest breakdown of the cheapest food handler certificate in Canada already names the three providers that charge less than we do.
The comparison table
These are the five online food handler courses Canadians compare most often. Prices were checked in August 2026 and can change, so confirm on each provider's site before you buy.
| Provider | Price | Course time | Course format | Exam and retakes | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Probe It | $49.95 | As little as 6 hours | Built in Articulate Storyline. An interactive activity or game every third screen | Proctored, with identity verification. Free unlimited retakes | Free WHMIS certificate + free resource library |
| CIFS (foodsafety.ca) | $99.95 | About 8 hours | Interactive lessons with audio and downloadable notes, per their site | Proctored via webcam. Free unlimited retakes | 12-month membership with a resource library |
| Food Safety Training (foodsafetytraining.ca) | $29.95 | About 6 hours | Standard online modules, English only | Free exam retests | Low price |
| SafeCheck | $27.95 | Self-paced | Fully narrated online course, per their site | Online final exam | Low price |
| Worksite Safety | $19.95 | Self-paced | Standard online modules | Online final exam | Lowest sticker price in Canada |
Every course in this table leads to a food handler certificate that is valid for 5 years. If you work in British Columbia, stop here: BC expects FOODSAFE Level 1 by name, so make sure the course you pick meets that requirement.
What "interactive" really means
Almost every provider calls their course "interactive." As an inspector, I have watched kitchen staff click Next through slideshows for four hours and retain almost nothing by inspection day. So let me define the word properly.
Most online courses are built one of three ways: a PowerPoint converted into web slides, a Word document poured into a course shell, or H5P slides with a quiz dropped in at the end of each module. You read, you click Next, you answer ten questions, you move on. That is reading with extra steps. It is not interactive.
The Probe It course is built in Articulate Storyline, the same professional authoring tool used for corporate and government training. It is Canada's only food safety course built in Storyline. Every third screen asks you to do something: play a short game, drag items to the right spot, make a decision in a kitchen scenario, or solve a problem before you can move forward. You cannot passively click your way to the end, and that is the point. Doing beats reading, every time.
I did not guess my way to that design. I spent two to three years collecting feedback from my own students and rebuilding screens they found boring. I wrote a full breakdown of why most online food safety courses are boring and how to spot one before paying. When over 200,000 students have gone through your course, you quickly learn which screens put people to sleep.

"I have inspected kitchens where every certificate on the wall was valid, and half the staff still could not tell me the safe internal temperature for chicken. The certificate proves you passed. The course format decides what you remember."

Each provider, honestly
Probe It, $49.95
My course. Built in Articulate Storyline with an interactive activity or game every third screen, developed by a Certified Public Health Inspector, and shaped by years of student feedback. Registration takes about 30 seconds, and you can certify in as little as 6 hours. The exam is proctored with identity verification, retakes are free and unlimited, and a free WHMIS certificate is included, which matters if your job involves cleaning chemicals. The course is government-approved and recognized by health units across Canada. Every student also gets our free resource library, with over 20 downloads across four categories, free for everyone with no yearly subscription. Where we lose: three providers below charge less if all you want is the paper.
CIFS, $99.95
The premium option and a name many HR departments already know. The course takes about 8 hours, is available in English and French, and the exam is proctored by webcam with free unlimited retakes. The 12-month membership with guides, posters, and checklists is genuinely useful for managers. Where they lose: it costs twice as much as ours and four to five times as much as the budget options. And a resource library does not need to cost money. Ours is free for everyone, no membership required.
Food Safety Training, $29.95
A solid budget pick. About 6 hours, accepted across Canada, free exam retests. Where they lose: English only, and their own marketing does not claim game-based or scenario-based learning.
SafeCheck, $27.95
Their Advanced Canadian Food Handler course is fully narrated, which helps auditory learners, and the price is low. Where they lose: narration is still a passive format. Listening to slides is not the same as making decisions on screen.
Worksite Safety, $19.95
The lowest sticker price in Canada right now, and I said the same in my cheapest certificate breakdown. If budget is the whole decision, this is the honest answer. Where they lose: at that price you get a standard click-through course, and if you also need WHMIS you are buying and completing two separate courses.
Choosing a course for your staff? Ask these questions first.
If you are a manager, owner, or HR lead buying training for a team, the sticker price is the smallest part of the cost. The real cost is paying wages while your staff sit through training they will not remember. Before you buy any course for your team, ask the provider these four questions:
- Is the course government-approved and accepted by health units across Canada? Ours is. If the provider cannot answer this in one sentence, walk away.
- Is it built as H5P slides? H5P is a slide tool, not an interactive learning tool. A quiz at the end of a module does not make a course interactive.
- Is it a Word document or a PowerPoint converted into an online course? Ask directly. Many are.
- Will they answer you directly? If a provider dodges the format question, you already have your answer. It is a boring course.
Trust me on this one. I have built and rebuilt this course for over 10 years and trained over 200,000 students. Bored staff don't retain, and staff who don't retain are the ones who fail temperature questions on inspection day. Under Ontario Regulation 493/17, every food premises needs at least one certified food handler on site during operating hours, and Health Canada estimates millions of Canadians get sick from contaminated food every year. Training your team is not the place to cut corners on quality.
For teams, group pricing is on our group and bulk registration page, and every seat includes the same interactive course and free WHMIS certificate.

Register NowFrequently asked questions
What is the best online food safety course in Canada?
It depends on your priority. Worksite Safety ($19.95) is the lowest-priced option. CIFS ($99.95) includes the largest resource library. Probe It at $49.95 is Canada's only food safety course built in Articulate Storyline, includes a free WHMIS certificate, and puts an interactive activity or game every third screen.
Are online food safety courses accepted in Canada?
Yes. Public health inspectors across Canada accept online food handler courses from recognized providers, and provinces like Ontario name recognized training in their food premises regulations. Always confirm the specific course is approved before buying, and remember that British Columbia expects FOODSAFE Level 1 by name.
What makes an online course interactive instead of boring?
A truly interactive course makes you do something on screen: play a short game, drag items into place, or make decisions in a scenario. A converted PowerPoint, a Word document in a course shell, or H5P slides with an end-of-module quiz is passive reading, no matter what the sales page calls it.
What is the cheapest food handler certificate in Canada?
Worksite Safety currently has the lowest sticker price at $19.95. If you also need WHMIS, bundles can work out cheaper overall. Our full price breakdown of every major provider, including the three that charge less than we do, is in our cheapest food handler certificate guide.
How long is a food handler certificate valid?
Five years in most provinces, including Ontario. After that, you retake a recognized course and exam to recertify. If you move to a different province, check with the local public health unit, since out-of-province certificates aren't automatically accepted everywhere in Canada.
Which course should teams and businesses choose?
Ask four questions before buying for staff: Is the course government-approved and accepted across Canada? Is it built as H5P slides, or is it a converted Word document or PowerPoint? Will the provider answer you directly? Format drives retention, and retention is what protects your kitchen on inspection day.
