Best Food Handlers Certificate in Canada (2026 Comparison)
Every major provider's price, what each one includes, and how to pick the right certificate for your province. Prices verified from each provider's own website in July 2026.
The best food handler certificate in Canada depends on your needs. The lowest sticker price is about $28 from SafeCheck. The best value for the money is $49.95 from Probe It, which includes a free WHMIS certificate worth $24.95 plus a free resource library. The biggest membership package is CIFS at $99.95 plus tax. Every recognized online certificate in this comparison is valid for 5 years.
In this guide
I develop the courses at Probe It, so you should read this comparison with that in mind. Here is my promise in return: every price below came from each provider's public website in July 2026; our own price sits in the same table as everyone else's; and I will tell you plainly where a competitor beats us. Most "best certificate" articles online are written by a single provider that ranks itself first without saying so. This one discloses everything and lets you do the math.
The comparison table (July 2026 prices)
| Provider | Price (CAD) | WHMIS included | Access window | Retakes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SafeCheck (safecheck1.com) | $27.95 | No, sold separately | 30 days; extension costs the full course price again | Unlimited, but $15 per attempt if proctoring rules are broken |
| Food Safety Training (foodsafetytraining.ca) | $29.95 | No | Check before buying | Free retests |
| Probe It (probeit.ca) | $49.95 | Yes, free ($24.95 value) | No expiry pressure; start and stop as needed | Unlimited, free |
| CIFS (foodsafety.ca) | $99.95 plus GST/HST | No | 30 days | Unlimited, free; includes 12-month membership |
One thing this table cannot show is that every certificate in it leads to the same legal outcome. A recognized certificate is a recognized certificate. Price buys features, support, and how pleasant the course is to sit through. It does not buy a more valid document.
What each provider is best at
SafeCheck: lowest sticker price
If you only need the food handler certificate, SafeCheck has the lowest price in Canada right now at about $28. That is a fact, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Read the fine print before you buy: the 30-day access window is real, an extension costs as much as the course itself, and exam attempts can carry a $15 charge if proctoring rules are broken. If you finish courses quickly, none of that will affect you.
Food Safety Training: low price, proctored exam
At $29.95 with free retests, foodsafetytraining.ca is a solid budget option with a webcam-proctored exam. It is a single-certificate purchase, so if your job also needs WHMIS, price that separately before comparing totals.
Probe It: most included for the money
This is us, so weigh my words accordingly. Our food handler certificate course is $49.95 and includes a free WHMIS certificate worth $24.95 in the same purchase, plus free access to our resource library of 18+ downloadable posters, checklists, and logs, with no membership fee. Many food jobs ask for both certificates, especially in grocery, institutional kitchens, and anywhere cleaning chemicals are used. Bought separately at two budget providers, the pair usually lands between $45 and $55, which is exactly why we bundled them at $49.95.
CIFS: the biggest resource package
The Canadian Institute of Food Safety charges $99.95 plus tax and includes a 12-month membership with guides, posters, and updates. It is the most expensive option in the table, and it is a well-established program with solid materials. If your employer is paying and wants the membership layer, it is a reasonable pick.
How I would choose, as an inspector
I spent years walking into kitchens with a clipboard before I started building courses. Here is something that surprises people: no inspector has ever asked an operator what they paid for their certificate. We check two things: that the provider is recognized and that the date is still valid. So choose on the four things that actually differ:
- What your health unit accepts. Confirm the provider is recognized where you work before paying anyone, including us. Ontario's requirements run through local public health units under the Food Premises Regulation (O. Reg. 493/17), and a two-minute call to your unit settles it.
- The access window. A 30-day deadline is fine for fast finishers and expensive for everyone else. If life tends to interrupt your plans, a course with no time pressure is worth more than a $25 saving.
- Retake rules. "Unlimited retakes" sometimes carries conditions. Read the exam policy, not just the headline.
- Who built the course. Anyone can package slides into a PDF and call it training. Ask whether public health professionals created and reviewed the content, because the certificate is only as good as the training behind it.
One more check that applies everywhere: the training should align with what Health Canada teaches about safe temperatures, cross-contamination, and hygiene. Every provider in this table covers those fundamentals. If you ever find one that does not, walk away no matter the price.
The British Columbia exception
If you work in food service in BC, this whole comparison changes. BC runs its own program called FOODSAFE Level 1, and that is the name your employer and health authority want to see. A generic food handler certificate is not the right purchase there. We offer FOODSAFE Level 1 for BC workers, and it is valid for 5 years like the food handler certificates elsewhere in Canada. Yukon recognizes FOODSAFE as well.
Why our course costs $49.95 and not $25
Fair question, and it deserves a straight answer. Double the sticker price has to buy something real. Here is what it buys:
- Two certificates in one purchase. The food handler certificate plus a free WHMIS certificate worth $24.95. If you need both, our bundle costs about the same as two budget courses combined.
- A course built by inspectors. Our content was created and is reviewed by Certified Public Health Inspectors, the same people who inspect kitchens for a living. I am one of them.
- Training that does not feel like a PDF. The course is built in Articulate Storyline 360 as a fully interactive experience, with an activity or game every few screens instead of walls of text. People finish courses they enjoy, and they remember more of them.
- Free resources, no membership fee. The resource library, which includes 18+ posters, checklists, and logs, is included and not sold as part of an annual membership.
- Track record. Over 200,000 Canadians have certified with us, and the course holds a 4.8 average across 1,711 verified reviews on Reviews.io.
"Nobody has ever failed an inspection because their certificate was cheap. People fail inspections because the training did not stick. Pick the course you will actually finish and remember."

Is a cheaper food handler certificate still valid?
Yes. If your local public health unit recognizes the provider, the certificate is fully valid regardless of what it cost. A $25 certificate and a $100 certificate carry the same legal weight. The differences are in course quality, what is included, and the fine print on access and retakes.
Which food handler certificate do employers prefer?
Most employers simply require a valid certificate from a recognized provider and do not favour one brand. A few large chains keep their own approved lists, so if you are certifying for a specific employer, ask them first. It takes two minutes and prevents paying for the wrong course.
Does a food handler certificate include WHMIS?
Usually not. Most providers sell WHMIS as a separate course at $20 to $30. Our course is the exception in this comparison: the $49.95 price includes a free WHMIS certificate worth $24.95, since many food jobs require both. WHMIS training renews annually, while the food handler certificate lasts 5 years.
Which certificate is fastest to get?
All four providers in this comparison are fully online with same-day certificates. With our course, you can certify in as little as 6 hours, registration takes 30 seconds, and your certificate is ready to print the moment you pass the exam. The speed differences between recognized providers are small.
What is the certificate called in British Columbia?
FOODSAFE Level 1. It is British Columbia's own program, and the name employers and health authorities there expect to see. If you work in BC food service, buy FOODSAFE Level 1 specifically rather than a generic food handler certificate. It is valid for 5 years, and Yukon recognizes it too.
